Told By Claude:

On the morning of the 24th I boarded the military shuttle bus going to the base site on the Keys where I worked.  When I arrived at the office Louise had called and needed me to take her to the naval hospital.  I boarded the same shuttle bus that I had gotten off because it was waiting to return the night shift personnel back to Key West.

When I arrived back in the apartment and waited a few hours then  her water broke and off we went to the hospital.  The nurse said that I could not stay in the room while Louise was in labor so I drove back to the apartment.

Later I received a call to come back to the hospital.  Mark Leonard came into this world that evening.  Louise looked very tired and when I walked in she told me to go to the nursery to see our son.  There he was.

SPECIAL NOTE: Anyone who is born in Key West, Florida is now known as a “conch.”  A conch is a sea shell that is found along the beaches in Key West.

Now we look back nine months and think about that “kidney infection” that she had in Naples.

The next day after the birth the hospital personnel told Louise that she would have to leave because they needed the bed space.  We brought Mark to this termite infested apartment and her mother helped to take care of the baby while Louise was recuperating.
